I have wanted a photo printer FOREVER but I hadn’t even fantasized about getting one that was wireless.

I’ve just set this up– took about an hour, so even computer idiots like me can get it out of the box, on the table, and printing quickly. The set-up info is all on one page and is easy to understand. You get a disc which gets you through the set-up process with the wireless.

The unit itself is the nicest piece of computer/printer/tv/dvd-type electronics I own. It looks like a Porsche Targa Carrera compared to my ratty old Dell laptop. Finally somebody has designed a printer that doesn’t have a whole lot of dust-collecting nooks and crannies on top of the unit. The printer is almost completely smooth on top, black, with sexy cobalt blue lighting.

I’ve printed about 15 pages of pictures so far and they look absolutely great. Some of the photo files are huge but the printing only takes about 30 seconds, 20 of those to upload the image. And this printer is smart, too–I closed the output tray to have a look at the paper supply tray and forgot to put the tray back down. When I printed the next photo (which you do by placing photographic paper in a different feeder) the Canon printer kindly remembered to open the output tray, which quietly hummed into the open position.

I have only printed photos directly from my computer as that is the most convenient for me. I know there are several ways to load the photos directly into the printer, for example there is a tray which allows you to load directly from a DVD. I also stuck my photo card directly into the printer (SD MS is the name of the slot) and was able to scroll through the photos and view them on a screen which also gave the option to print.

The flatbed scanner works great and just as quickly as my much more expensive Brother laser printer. You can print using the Canon software, but I prefer using the Microsoft picture viewer as I am already familiar with it. The canon menu also offers options for creating things like calendars, movies, et cetera.

I will be interested to see how long the ink lasts, as the cartridges seem quite small (but I’ve been using laser printers for years so haven’t seen the average size of an ink cartridge these days). The printer is “Ink Tank Compatible” which I had to look up online to figure out. I can’t tell if they are refillable (by me) and can’t readily find this information.

I realize that I am a bit of a technological Neanderthal, so more computer-savvy people will probably have experienced some of the features I have mentioned and perhaps not be so impressed. That said, I am absolutely thrilled to be able to print photos without having to haul my laptop into the office and plug in a USB cable.

We have struggled with an old Epson all-in-one printer at our house for the last couple years. Initially we bought whatever we could get for the cheapest price and that Epson worked for us. After a few months of use we very much regretted buying Epson. It was slow, unreliable and if we did not print on a very regular basis the ink would dry up…we’ve been through two Epson printers and will not go back.

That all being said, we recently welcomed this new Canon all-in-one to our home and in the past few weeks been very impressed. Firstly the setup took less than 5 minutes and we’re using this as a standalone wireless printer. Plugged it in, put in the wireless security key then both our Windows and Mac computers picked it up and found the drivers. The Canon Pixma has a beautiful, sleek look to it, but does not disappoint on functionality. In efforts to save space it has a small paper tray on the bottom, instead of sitting straight up out the back of the printer. Speed is the first thing we noticed…when we send a print job to the Canon it starts immediately and is usually done before we can even get to the printer.

We’ve been trying to properly test the printer with color and high resolution pictures and have not yet been let down by it. Our last Epson was listed as a photo printer but does not at all compare to the Canon Pixma. The few pictures I printed, black and white as well as bright vibrant pictures…both stunning in quality. No need to send away for prints at the drug store, we just need to keep photo paper in the house!

We’re not at all regretting the decision on this Canon All-in-One. Trying to be as objective as possible here, but have not yet found any cons to this printer.

Upgrade firmware for AirPrint on iOS devices, October 5, 2011

This review is from: Canon PIXMA MG5320 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-in-One Printer (5291B019) (Office Product)

I bought this today because I heard it supported AirPrint. I tried the one in the local Staples but it couldn’t find the printer via my iPad. I bought one and brought it home and it didn’t see it either. Once I upgraded the firmware and restarted nothing looked different on the screen or in the menus but it appeared just fine on my iPad.

I loaded letter sized plane paper in the bottom drawer and 4×6 photo paper in the top slot on the back. When I printed a photo from my iPad it printed full-bleed on the 4×6 photo paper. When I printed a webpage it pulled the paper from the cassette and printed it on plain paper. There was nothing to adjust and it worked better than I thought and it printed quick. The printer was never plugged into a computer either, except for updating the firmware.

Only cons I have is that there is no way, to my knowledge, a way to configure media, print settings or any details like that when using AirPrint. I could see why would wouldn’t want it on the iOS device or even lots of options on the menu of the printer but please give us some geeky tools for the web admin section of the printer so we can get some better prints.

The photos I tried printed out a bit warm and maybe too much red in them. It wasn’t bad with people in the photos just a little too warm for my taste.
