Almost perfect,
We got this machine to replaced our Canon MF5770 that we had for about 4 years, and finally sucame to the dreaded “download standby” error. We use all functions of the machine, both this one and the MF5570 which it replaced.
We are a small medical research clinic, and the machines usually gets about 50 pages on average sent to them either from a print job or a fax. Many days it will be quite a bit more. We also fax jobs out a few times a day. The new machine is a definite upgrades in many ways, and a downgrade in one critical way (though how critical will very per person).
So what’s great about this machine?
- Duplexing: Works great and is speedy. It also duplexes faxes and print jobs.
- Networking: Once set up correctly you can print to this printer from anywhere, and scan from the computer or from the machine to a computer on your network.
- Speed: Print jobs are fast.
- Paper tray: Holds plenty of paper and the translucent cover lets you see when you are running low.
- Size: Its about half the size of the printer it replaced, and yet its still faster, and does more.
- Scanning: The included software is a breeze to use, and the ability to initiate scanning from the machine or the computer is ideal. Before only the one computer attached to the machine could scan, but now all the computers in the clinic can scan. This is a huge time saver for us.
- Energy Saver Mode: Works great, and wakes up super fast from this mode so no waiting to print or fax or copy but you still save energy.
So whats not so great about this machine?
- Text quality: The text printed from the machine is just a bit not right. I mean, most people will not notice is, but the MF5770 had superb text rendering, and this machine just doesn’t. Its completely passable, and like I mentioned most people would not even notice. Its too sharp, and not smooth, is the real way to describe it. Some people might even prefer the extra sharpness, but I sure didn’t, and neither did the PCMag editors.
- Buttons: The buttons are like tictacs in shape and sort of hollow, and are not great on the fingers, and sort of small. The layout is also a little weird. The menu okay button is a big round circle and I keep hitting it instead of the button i actually mean to hit, the green ok button for initiating an actual activity.
- Noise: Its very quiet when not in use, but maybe a tad too loud when in use. However its fast so its not noisy for very long.
Some other things. I’ve seen it asked many places to let me just clear it up here. This machine will provide a confirmation page for faxes and include an image of the fax facesheet. It is not located under the fax settings but under the reports setting. You just need to go to reports–>fax tx–>print report with image after each transmission–>yes/on. If you set the machines up correctly, you can have it so that the machines scans a file and attaches it right to an email with the push of one button. Love this feature as we often have to email scanned documents.
This machine got the editor’s choice award from PC mag, and rightly so. For the price you get an incredibly versatile, speedy, machine that doesn’t take up much space and can handle the work load of a small office with ease. You just can’t beat that.

This printer has proven to be exactly what our office was looking for — simple to setup and use…. not a thing complicated about it. Have run nearly 1000 copies, scanned & fax’d a few hundred documents through it without a problem. Basically — it was an excellent multifunctional laser printer for the money (paid about $219 including S&H from J&R Electronics Inc.).

|Best little multifunction printer available today,
We have recently acquired a Brother 7360n and a HP 1217nf all in one laserjet printers along with this Canon MF4570dn. It was interesting to see the different approaches taken by these three companies to produce a product for the home and small office market. The HP had the least refined design and the highest price by far for replacement cartridges but was easy to setup and get running. The Brother 7360n had the smallest footprint as it does not have a tray that sticks out from the side but is contained within the space of the main body of the printer. The Canon took a middle ground with a trap that sticks out 4 inches but has a very nice transparent dust cover and lid and has an exit tray for the printed pages that is better than the Brother approach were the pages are ejected to a space inside the printer and they tend to jam.
Printing is fast for all three multifunction laserjets but the big difference is in what happens after the page is printed. With the Canon there is immediate silence, with the HP silence after about 15 seconds, and with the Brother the loud fan noise continues for a full 11 minutes. After some research I found this to be a common defect across the Brother laserjet line, even with units costing 2-3 times as much as the 7360n.
Cost for the replacement printer cartridges is much less for the Brother and the Canon than for the HP printer which is double theirs in cost. There are also high capacity cartridges available for the Canon and the Brother but not for the HP 12xx series laserjet printers.
Setup was about the same with all three manufacturer’s printers with a couple of exceptions. The Nuance software provided with the Brother is a couple notches above the similar software provided by Hewlett Packard and Canon. Setting the IP address for the printer was simple and straightforward with the Brother and the HP printers and Byzantine with the Canon 4570n printer. Canon makes this even worse by not providing a manual as a simple PDF but instead requiring the installation of a Web application that is the last step in the installation process.
The Canon 4570 installation process looks for the IP address of the printer which by default is created by a DHCP server. Not a good idea if you turn the printer off as it will then be assigned a new IP address and your computers will not be able to print to it.
Setting the IP address is a 10 step process within a bizarre menu structure that is as counter intuitive as I have come across in 30 years of working with computer devices. Canon’s product managers would be wise to go out of their labs and look at how Brother and HP do their menu and UI designs.
In terms of easy to use controls with a minimum of key entries the Brother 7360n is the best followed at a distance by the Canon 4570dn. Worst is the HP which is hobbled by a very small keypad that leaves little room for task specific buttons and so menus are required more for even simple copying or faxing.
For scanning the Brother with the Nuance software comes out on top with the ability to enter computers by name and push scanned images to the computer where they can appear as a PDF file that is ready to save or to attach to an email. Scanning with the HP is also easy. Canon makes this more difficult than it needs to be especially with having to go from the computer to the scanner to set the scanner to “Remote” before you can scan from the computer. Only Canon has the inability to scan remotely and pull the data or push it from the scanner to any PC without changing a setting on the scanner. Not a show stopper but mildly irritating.
Overall when compared to the HP and Brother multifunction laserjet machines the Canon comes out on top – at least at this time. I say at this time as in 6 months Brother may have new models without the fan problem and they would be a good buy if that happens.
