If you open the packaging of the new HP Photosmart A636 Compact printer you’ll be forgiven for a moment the suffering sense of déjà vu, as it is an upgrade from virtually identical Photosmart A626.
There are times when you need a heavy-duty, full-on printer is capable of churning to large volumes of documents, and there are times when you need something relatively cheap and in a good mood to print pictures when you are traveling or friend of the house, and access to a PC is not always easy. It is in this situation is that the A636 itself.
Designed in elegant black, around the size of a small toaster (252 x 117 x 134mm) and weighing not more than 1.52 kg, the A636 comes with a built-in carrying handle. An adjustable paper tray at the rear can handle 10 to 15cm x 13 x 18 cm and sizes on top is a large, bright and bold, rocking, 12cm touch screen with stylus support.
The output drops to the bottom shelf of the front to reveal a series of memory card slots that can accommodate almost anything you can throw at them (CompactFlash Type I and II, Magic Gate Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Secure Digital / MultiMediaCard, Smart Media, xD-Picture Card). In addition, there is a USB 2.0 PictBridge port for the use of flash cards or optional Bluetooth and wireless connection.
If you decide you want to print photos via your computer, then there’s a USB connection round the back. A major breakthrough is that there is no need for a software disk to install your drivers as they are all integrated and it is literally a matter of minutes before getting up and running.
When this machine is a bit of fun at hand, however, it is with the imagination box of tricks that you can access via the Creative icon on the menu screen. As red-eye correction and Photo Fix (which is enabled by default), you can add many images, add subtitles separate create photo albums and layouts, add clip-art , Design greeting cards, to apply Design Gallery effects (like pet-eye fix, sepia and Touch-Up) and even draw directly on photos before printing. There are 20 different color options for the development and labeling and five font styles, so there is much to do to let your mind wander free.
Another major improvement is the quality of finished images. The print speed is still relatively quiet (we averaged about one and a quarter minutes per print), but the HP 110 Tri-color inkjet cartridge, using HP’s standard ink smudging Vibera ‘s has been dynamic, authentic and crisply defined colors. If you’re planning a Sleepover or simply treat your vacation photos, this could be a valuable piece of kit.
